Luckyland Slots Review

Luckyland Slots is a California-friendly social casino with an extensive real-money component. The site is owned by Virtual Gaming Worlds and is based on the same sweepstakes business model as its sister platforms, Chumba Casino and Global Poker.

Launched in early 2019 following a month-long open beta, it operates under a Malta-issued license, but its parent company is based in Australia.

Unlike other VGW sites, Luckyland Slots is currently available exclusively in the United States, except in Washington.

Luckyland Slots and California regulations

According to Section 330 of the California Penal Code, playing on offshore sites constitutes a misdemeanor and is punishable by a fine of up to $1,000 and six months in jail. This doesn’t apply to Luckyland as it is a social casino with sweepstakes-based cash rewards.

The site doesn’t allow its customers to put their money directly on the line. It does, however, offer an option to purchase play money chips, called Gold Coins, for real cash.

Every Gold Coins pack is bundled with free sweepstakes tickets, which are called $weeps. $weeps don’t meet the definition of a virtual currency because they are worth nothing by default. They only become redeemable when a player participates in the sweepstakes by playing one of the $weeps slots.

While elaborate, this system is completely fool-proof from a legal point of view, allowing US-based players to experience the rush of playing real casino games without violating any California-specific or federal laws.

Luckyland Slots casino app

Luckyland Slots’ software is powered by HTML5 and launches as soon as you click Play on the casino’s website. It’s compatible with a wide range of browsers, including Chrome and Safari, as well as their mobile counterparts for iOS and Android devices.

The site doesn’t require Java, but don’t expect stellar performance on slow connections. The games and the lobby are packed with eye candy, so a broadband connection is recommended.

The interface emphasizes style over comfort of use. Every day you want to visit the casino, you need to click through at least two promotions that award you with free Gold Coins, which is a bummer if all you’re interested in is $weeps play. The game browser is aesthetically pleasing thanks to large, poster-like icons representing the available slots, but this setup makes it harder to go directly to your favorite title.

This wouldn’t be a problem if you could switch to a more traditional game browser via the settings menu, but unfortunately, this option wasn’t available on launch. This issue is specific to game selection as all the other menus are well laid-out and readily accessible from anywhere in the lobby.

What games are available at Luckyland Slots?

Luckyland’s game portfolio is limited to 19 five-reel video slots. All the available games were developed in-house exclusively for this site – there is zero overlap with platforms operated by other companies or even VGW’s own Chumba Casino.

The games’ quality matches the technical excellence of slots designed by industry leaders such as Playtech or IGT – smooth 3D graphics, crisp sound effects, and neat designs are a feast for the senses.

The gameplay is also top-notch thanks to the liberal implementation of modern bonus mechanics such as expanding wilds, feature rounds, free spins, and payout multipliers. The only gripe we have with this suite is the lack of thematic innovation. The games, such as Mayan Gold or Pirates Bounty, will not feel original to any casino veteran. However, the production value and smooth gameplay make up for this flaw.

How can I make purchases and receive payouts?

Luckyland Slots is a social site, so you can’t make a direct deposit to your account and use the money to play the games. Instead, you need to purchase Gold Coins to be awarded $weeps.

As mentioned, $weeps are sweepstakes tickets, not virtual currency, which means that you must wager them at least once (play the sweepstakes) to redeem them for real cash. Consequently, $weeps are completely worthless and can’t be cashed out until you complete your 1x playthrough.

Luckyland Slots doesn’t give its customers any payment method choices. All Gold Coins + $weeps bundles need to be purchased using a credit card, and prize redemptions are sent exclusively via an Electronic Funds Transfer. Typically, the redemption process takes between three and five business days, but it might take longer if you haven’t verified your account in advance.

What bonuses and promotions does Luckyland offer?

Unlike Chumba Casino, Luckyland awards its customers free Gold Coins on every turn. Daily login bonuses, timer-based giveaways, and free spins that can be given to your friends create a healthy social casino environment. The site also supports slots tournaments, and other types of events are set to be added soon.

The situation is different for Luckyland’s real money component – the only way to get some additional bang for your buck is to purchase a $4.99 Gold Coins bundle for the first time and receive $10 worth of $weeps.
